Blurb: Young mechanic Andrew Campbell’s life couldn’t be better. He is about to restore a Ford Mustang with his dad before heading off on the ultimate cross-country road trip with his best friend, Tanner McKenzie.
But tragedy strikes, and Andrew’s life is shattered. Worried his family will be torn apart if he doesn’t step in, Andrew makes a tough choice between following his heart and doing what he needs to do to protect his little brother.
When Andrew pushes Tanner away, Tanner heads off on the planned trip alone. Once Tanner leaves town, his life takes a different path and it’s ten years before he returns. Now a firefighter, he’s never forgotten his first love, and no one has ever taken Andrew’s place in his heart. He’s determined to see if Andrew feels the same way. He just hopes Andrew’s excited to see him, hopes that he’s available—and finally out—after all this time.
They might not have been ready to deal with emerging feelings years ago, but now might be the time for their second chance at love.
He semijogged down the dark corridor to the men’s room and pushed open the door. Tanner stood at the sinks, washing his hands. Andrew stopped just inside the door and watched Tanner’s shoulders move under the thin fabric of his T-shirt as he held his hands in the stream of running water. His gray eyes looked up and met Andrew’s in the mirror, and they stared for a long while until eventually Tanner spoke. “What do you want?”
Andrew held his breath and his chest tightened. What do I want? That question had so many possible answers: his dad to be alive, no financial worries—the freedom to make choices for his life…. Tanner broke eye contact and stepped across to pull a paper towel from the dispenser. He angrily dried his hands before throwing the crumpled paper into the overflowing trash. Andrew stepped closer.
“You.” Andrew whispered to Tanner’s back.
Tanner swung around quickly. “What did you say?”
Andrew looked to his feet and then back up at Tanner, his heart in his throat. “You heard me.”
“Say it again.” Tanner challenged.
Andrew swallowed over the lump that threatened to choke him. “I want you.”
Even as he said the words, Tanner stepped forward and reached for him, but Andrew moved quickly and raised his own hands to shield himself. Tanner stopped midstride and lowered his arms to his side.
“But I can’t have you.”
