Blog Tour, Playlist, and Giveaway – Chasing Sunrise by Lex Chase

Hello, Internet! I’m Lex Chase and I want to give a big thank you to Charlie for having me by today. Tomorrow (our should I say tonight at Midnight EST!) my latest DSP Publications release Chasing Sunrise will be out in the wilds!

Chasing Sunrise is a harrowing high fantasy horror of Sevon Maraté, a king struggling through domestic violence and the struggle to save his dying people. Hope presents itself in an unlikely scenario when a shifter extends his kindness and a chance for escape. But with an invasion looming and genocide imminent, Sevon will be driven to make some difficult decisions that will affect not only him, but the fate of his crumbling kingdom.

In the darkness, there’s still a glimmer of hope, but make no mistake… Love makes monsters of us all.

My readers know my books straddle line between pretty snarky yet with some dark points. Chasing Sunrise is Dark. With a capital D. It asks much of the audience, and what best to get into the mood with a little music?

My playlist for Chasing Sunrise on my laptop is epic. We’re talking hundreds of songs. My list can run for 72 hours start to finish. This? I trimmed down to 11 tracks to keep you going on your lunch break.

Moody and melodious, with the stylings of Florence + The Machine, Nick Cave, Hans Zimmer, Thomas Newman, and Steampunk musician Escape the Clouds to name a few. This playlist evokes what I call “elegant waste” of the world of Chasing Sunrise. Brush the dirt off, and see the beauty underneath.

“If you’re gunna dine with the cannibals, then sooner or later darling you’re gunna get eaten. But I’m glad you came around here with your animals. With your heart that is bruised and beating, and banging like a drum.” — Nick Cave, Cannibal’s Hymn

Question to you! What’s the song or songs that have the greatest emotional significance to you? Who is that one musical artist that within three notes you’ll smile or you’ll be crying? (True confession: Thomas Newman always makes me cry!)

The once glorious aisa kingdom of Darkmore lies in ruins, and King Sevon Maraté is trapped. Sevon endures unrelenting abuse and is used as a scapegoat by Lord Dominic Ravensgrove, who rules Darkmore from the shadows. Coping by dressing in gowns and jewels, the effeminate king relishes the scraps of freedom he is given to be himself.

As a verkolai, Sevon possesses the ability to part the Veil separating his world from hundreds of others. His gift provides a chance for escape, but Dominic refuses to relinquish his tool for power. When Dominic forges an ambitious plan to invade the prosperous shifter land of Priagust, he manipulates Sevon’s desperation for his people’s survival. Out of options, Sevon has no choice but to cooperate.

On their foray into Priagust, Dominic’s men abduct a shifter named Jack. Despite being tortured for information, Jack’s loyalty to his kind never wavers. But Jack’s knowledge about Darkmore’s history unsettles Sevon, and a curious bond begins to form. Despite Sevon’s mistrust, Jack is determined to tame the beautiful king’s wild heart and perhaps earn his freedom.

As war looms, Sevon fears Jack’s kindness is another trap. Conflicted, Sevon wonders if he should risk chasing the sunrise or remain Dominic’s compliant prisoner.

About the Author:

Lex Chase once heard Stephen King say in a commercial, “We’re all going to die, I’m just trying to make it a little more interesting.” Now, she’s on a mission to make the world a hell of a lot more interesting.

Weaving tales of cinematic, sweeping adventure—and depending on how she feels that day—Lex sprinkles in high-speed chases, shower scenes, and more explosions than a Hollywood blockbuster. Her pride is in telling stories of men who kiss as much as they kick ass. If you’re going to march into the depths of hell, it better be beside the one you love.

Lex is a pop culture diva, her DVR is constantly backlogged, and unapologetically loved the ending of Lost. She wouldn’t last five minutes without technology in the event of the apocalypse and has nightmares about refusing to leave her cats behind.

You can find in the Intarwebz here:

  1. I was in an abusive relationship and REM’s Losing My Religion gave me the strength to get out. It became my anthem of freedom and can still evoke those feelings today.

    • That’s amazing Susan. Music is a powerful thing. I too endured such a horror (hence the book!) and I want to give you a high five because we both made it out and we’re better for it. I’ve actually been listening to a lot of 90s Grunge and Alternative lately (dating myself with my misbegotten youth LOL) and pretty much all of the songs conjure memories of my times with my abusive girlfriend. Like I can remember what we were doing when we heard certain songs.

Particularly “Freshmen” by Verve Pipe was a song we both loved for it’s story. Talking about how a perfect relationship spiraled out of control and motivated one of the characters to suicide and the survivors refuse to take responsibility. While my relationship didn’t end in THAT much of a dark place, but I definitely understand the story a lot better, and find it far more personal. And you know what? Instead of being angry and changing the station? I roll the windows down in my car, crank it all the way up, and scream out the lyrics like a devil may care.

Thank you for not giving up. Thank you for being here. 😀

  2. Thanks for having me Charlie! Why don’t you chime in with your favorite tune? 😀
