There’s something to be said for life experience, a little gray at the temple…

And then there is the appeal of youth.

When it comes to what the heart wants, Age Is Just A Number.

As he’d stepped into Twin Peaks Tavern, patrons stopped drinking and smoking to gawk. He surveyed the crowd, and I wasn’t surprised when he walked toward Gary and me. I felt a mix of betrayal and sorrow as Gary shifted into cruising mode. He withdrew his attention from me and focused everything he had on the youth. I knew that, like scores of others, he was about to be seduced by Gary’s good looks, smoldering sexuality, and appealing age. Gary had just turned thirty, not forty like me. They’d hook up and have delirious fun for a month or so, and the poor boy would fall head over heels in love. But unless he could cast a magic spell, Gary would soon tire of him and send him packing with his heart shattered. However, he didn’t gravitate to Gary. Instead, he stopped equidistant between our barstools and introduced himself. Gary turned on the charm and complimented Michael’s haircut and the way he filled out his T-shirt and corduroys. I said nothing and finished my beer.

When I set down my mug and stood to go, Michael cut Gary off mid-flirtation and gazed at me. “I really wanted to talk to you. I bet you’re old enough to give good advice. The two guys I’ve dated so far think sexual freedom is more important than committed love. Do you believe that’s really true?”

I looked straight into his trusting green eyes and said, “I only know what’s true for me, and I want committed love.” Gary looked like a prince who’d just seen his throne usurped when Michael grinned and said, “Me too. Do you think you and I could go on a date?”
