Will hearts soar when pigs fly?

Alex’s job working for his family-owned radio station once took him all over the city reporting on major events—until the accident. His scars, both physical and emotional, cause him to withdraw into a self-imposed, semi-reclusive lifestyle. When his dad requests that he go to the world’s largest hot air balloon festival, he has to find the courage to break his isolation. Now he needs to find the courage to trust and love again.

Jeff had already been planning a move to Albuquerque when he lost his home, parents, and dog to a wildfire in California. To begin his new life, he agrees to help his sister and brother-in-law with their balloon at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. Now he’s seen pigs fly and bees kissing, but will he find the love he’s been searching for?

“The Fiesta has grown so much since it first started. Now it’s like the second coming of the State Fair.” He chattered on about all the events and activities available.

He relaxed as they moved around the cars talking about their own favorites. The smiles and looks Jeff gave him as they talked warmed his heart. No one had looked at him like that in such a long time. They stopped in front of a shiny red Corvette, and Alex took a moment to ogle Jeff in the reflection from the windows. When Jeff tugged at his sleeve, he realized that Jeff had switched sides and was now walking on his left side, where the scarring was visible. Alex wanted to run away, but Jeff’s hand brushed his own, and a sense of calm filled Alex. Occasionally when they had to pass through narrower spaces, Jeff would let him go first and gently touch his back. Those little touches filled Alex with hope.

“Are you interested in seeing any of the sales tents?” Jeff asked when they finished looking at the cars. “I need to find something for Cindy’s birthday.”

“Sure. They always have unique vendors here. I’m sure you’ll find something interesting.”

They walked around until they found a tent filled with scarves, shawls and assorted hand crafted sweaters. Jeff sorted through a stack of scarves until he found one. It had a hand-woven blue and gold pattern.

“I think she’ll like this one.” Jeff looked at him. “I’m almost tempted to keep if for myself though.”

“Because it reminds me of you.” Jeff stroked the soft shawl. “Golden hair and deep blue eyes. Maybe I should keep it.”

Alex’s heart fluttered at the soft tone in Jeff’s voice. Then Jeff nodded and slung the scarf over his shoulder before turning back to the pile on display.

“What’s your favorite color?” Jeff asked.

“Green.” Though the honey-brown of Jeff’s eyes was fast becoming his second favorite.

Jeff shuffled through the pile until he found what he was looking for. He held out the green scarf for Alex to see. “What do you think?”

“About what?”

Jeff wound the scarf around Alex’s neck. “Is it the right color green?”

“It’s beautiful.” Alex normally didn’t wear scarves because the fabric irritated the scars on his neck, but this fabric was soft and silky against his skin. The emerald color was wonderful. Alex stroked the material and smiled. “I love it.”
