Book Blitz, Guest Post, and Giveaway – All the Way to Shore by CJane Elliott

All the Way to Shore Banner

Thank you, Charlie, and Purple Rose Teahouse for hosting me for my newest release, All the Way to Shore. I had the best time writing this story. It was originally to be for Dreamspinner Press’s Dreamspun Desires line which is all about romantic tropes and fluffy stories. Being me, I couldn’t help having some angst in there too. How Jonathan’s relationship with his father caused low self-esteem and depression in Jonathan, and then how the unexpected death of his beloved mother deepened his hopelessness… all of that is in the story, along with the battles Marco has to fight against an unfair and discriminatory boss. But I think that makes it real. The world can be a scary place. We need our romance! Seeing the heroes overcoming bad stuff, healing their psychic wounds, and finding love because of it, is what makes reading and writing romance so rewarding.

I hope you find reading All the Way to Shore as rewarding as I found writing it!

Synopsis

Jonathan Vallen has never felt good enough. A gentle musician who loves to garden, he’s woefully unsuited to running Vallen Industries, the family business. When his father hires a hotshot executive, Marco Pellegrini, to save the company, Jonathan moves away and leaves his humiliation behind. A year later and forty pounds lighter, Jonathan runs into Marco on an LGBT cruise. Marco doesn’t recognize him, the sparks fly, and Jonathan pretends to be someone else for the week—Jonah Rutledge—someone good enough to be loved.

Marco Pellegrini has always been driven. He rose from poverty to the pinnacle of business success, and he’ll do anything to protect his reputation—including hiding his bisexuality. Having saved Vallen Industries, he’s weary of the rat race and ready for a more meaningful life. When Marco meets his soul mate for that new life—Jonah Rutledge—on an LGBT cruise, he prepares to stop hiding and start living.

Back on land, the romance crashes when Marco discovers his perfect man is not only a lie but the son of his boss, Frederick Vallen. Jonathan resolves to win Marco back, but Frederick takes vengeful action. Jonathan and Marco must battle their own fears as well as Frederick’s challenge to get to the future that awaits them on the horizon.

Excerpt

Jonathan eyed the moon and waited for Marco, who was getting something from the bar to bring back with them to his stateroom. He smiled up at the stars, heart full, ready to ride the wave of this fairy tale all the way to shore. Then a hand caressed his neck, and he turned to smile at his handsome prince. Marco smiled back, his pendant glimmering on his chest and a bottle in his hand.

“What did you get?”

“Courvoisier.”

“Nice.”

“I thought it’d be nice for an after-dinner drink as we listen to Debussy.”

They strolled along the deck. “We are almost too fancy for words.”

Marco chuckled. “I’ve never been accused of being fancy before.”

Jonathan eyed him, tall and elegant with his black curls and Roman nose. “You seem fancy to me. Or, well, sophisticated is more like it.”

“If only Mama could hear you. She’d know her bambino had made it in the world.”

“You’re funny.”

Jonathan followed Marco into his stateroom, letting his Jonah Persona take the lead lest he pass out from sheer nervousness. “Nice digs.” Digs? Where’d that come from?

“Thanks.” Marco picked up a large envelope that had been shoved under the door, glanced at the front of it, and tossed it to join a pile of others on the desk. “Work faxes. They don’t seem to get I’m on vacation in the middle of the ocean. They can wait.”

A shiver took hold of Jonathan, thinking of Father and how totally like him it was to be bugging his CEO in the middle of his vacation.

“You aren’t cold, are you?” Marco asked.

“No, it’s fine. I’m fine. Everything’s good.” And I’m running off at the mouth. Cool it.

“Oh, okay. Good. Let me get the Debussy up on my iPod. They have a docking station with pretty decent speakers in here.” Marco sounded a little nervous himself.

As Marco fiddled with the iPod, Jonathan opened the Courvoisier and poured each of them a moderate amount, thinking they could both use some loosening up. “Do you want yours over ice?”

Marco turned. “No. That’s okay. There should still be some ice in the bucket if you like it that way. Here we go.” He pushed a button and Debussy’s La Mer started to play.

They sat in two armchairs at one end of the large room, listening to Debussy’s sensual and passionate music while sipping the brandy. The music swelled and crashed down in eerie imitation of the ocean all around them. With the curtains drawn back, they stared out at the real thing, moonlight dappling the midnight waves. Everything about this moment was surreal—a beautiful dream.

After a time, Marco set down his glass, his eyes burning into Jonathan’s. Jonathan gulped down the rest of his drink for courage and put his glass next to Marco’s. Marco held out his hand, and they rose from their chairs. As Jonathan followed Marco to the bed, his palms grew clammy and his heart raced so much he thought he might pass out. Now that his Jonah Persona had been successful in luring Marco to bed, performance anxiety crowded out everything else. God. It had been so long since he’d had sex. Did he even know what he was doing? Anthony’s voice chimed in on the proceedings. Relax, doll! It’s just like riding a bicycle. You never forget. Now, hop on that man and ride!

BLURB

The interview of a lifetime.

When Aaron Strickland’s assigned to write a feature article on Caleb Douglas, the first openly gay soldier to receive the Medal of Honor, he’s over-the-moon. Meet a sexy, real-life hero? Yes, please. And in the weeks leading up to their interview, the former soldier becomes a recurring player in Aaron’s fantasies.

A man Caleb can’t forget.

Years earlier, lost in the throes of depression and PTSD after an ambush left his body and soul scarred, Caleb was on the brink of giving up when a magazine article changed his life forever—an article written by Aaron. Emerging from the depths of his pain, Operation Better Tomorrow—part homestead, part halfway house for those down on their luck—was born.

Tragedy lurking on the horizon.

As the days pass, Caleb and Aaron’s tragic pasts bind them in ways they aren’t prepared for, but it also leaves them vulnerable. Pushing forward means breaking down walls they’ve built to protect themselves, and just as they’re poised on the precipice of happiness, a darkness descends on the homestead, a hatred that will leave one man clinging to life and the other willing to risk everything to save him.

EXCERPT

Aaron’s dick tightened, and he took a step toward Caleb. “I’ve learned a lot about homestead operations today, but I want to know more about you. Tell me, Sergeant Douglas, what inspired you to begin Operation Better Tomorrow?”

Caleb scrubbed a palm over the back of his neck. “That’s kinda embarrassing, actually.”

“I don’t believe that. How can the origin story of a place like this be embarrassing?”

Another minuscule step closer.

“Because of you, Aaron.”

“Me? How do I fit in?”

Caleb looked down, hands fisted low on his hips in a masculine mirroring of Aubrey. “Things got really low for me about six, seven years ago. The physical therapy was torture, and I was in pain all the time. The PTSD and depression didn’t help matters either. I was sick and fucking tired of it all.”

Was that code for wanting to commit suicide? Aaron wanted to ask, but he held back, letting Caleb finish.

“Then, one day, I was sitting on the couch, a bottle of pain pills in one hand and a bottle of Jack Daniels in the other, when a magazine on the coffee table caught my attention. To this day I don’t know how it got there, but a title on the cover caught my attention. So I started reading. Everything the woman in the article was going through, her physical and emotional pain… Change a few things, and it could have been written about me. And by the time I finished, I was in tears.” The left side of his mouth tipped up in a haunting smile. “Although, I’d appreciate it if you’d leave the crying part out of the article. I do have a reputation to maintain.”

“Totally off the record.” Aaron held up his three middle fingers and stepped closer. “Scout’s honor.”

Caleb nodded. “It’s hard to put into words, but the article struck a chord deep inside me. It was one of those life-changing moments where everything becomes clear. The past, the present, the future. And I saw this place in my head. Operation Better Tomorrow, a way to turn my pain into someone else’s better tomorrow.”

“Wow. That’s just… Wow.” Something about the words Caleb used were familiar, but Aaron couldn’t quite place them. “As a writer, that would be the greatest compliment a person could give me, to tell me my words were the bridge they needed to get from a painful past and into a brighter future. I think I would literally fall over from pride.”

Caleb closed what little distance remained between them. “Is that your subtle way of telling me I should be prepared to catch you?”

“Be prepared to catch me?” The question escaped seconds before realization bitchslapped him. Oh, Sweet Baby J. He’d written the article that had saved Caleb’s life.

About the Author

Brandi Evans was raised by a caravan of traveling Gypsies. She spent her days learning the ways of her people and her nights lost in legends as old as time. Okay, not really, but that’s way more interesting than the truth!

In reality, Brandi grew up the oldest child of an ordinary family. Grade school, middle school, high school. Nothing extraordinary happened until she left the nest. She joined the military, went to college, got married, and became a mom. And somewhere along the way, she discovered she liked to read—and write!—stories hot enough to melt eReaders.

These days, she calls The Natural State home where she lives with her hubby, two beautiful daughters, two dogs and a cat who has yet to realize she doesn’t own the place. Soldier. Wife. Mom. Multi-published smut writer. Brandi’s life might not be “traveling Gypsy” interesting, but she’s had fun. And in the end, isn’t that all that really matters?

Second chances can appear where you least expect them.

An artist: You can’t go home again—that was Nick’s motto for the past twenty years. He was a teenager when he left his abusive, mentally ill father back in Lacland, a small town in the northwoods of Wisconsin.

Nick’s made a successful life for himself in New York. Then comes the call—his estranged father has killed himself. Nick flies home to a house crumbling from years of neglect, and one very fat bulldog.

And a veterinarian: Jonas doesn’t love his job enforcing university research protocol. His passion is working with dogs, especially volunteering for his boyfriend’s behavioral studies projects. But when he discovers his so-called “life partner” is messing around, he leaps at a job offer in a small town miles away.

In spite of the grief swirling around Nick and Jonas, their first meeting is electric. But Nick will be in town for only a short time and Jonas is still stinging from the betrayal. The men try to keep their distance, but that’s easier said than done, especially in a small town where misery and hope share the same address.

This poignant story about two mature gay men will warm the hearts of readers who believe happy endings are within anyone’s grasp.

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT

Nick woke with a stiff neck and a spring poking into his rib. Served him right for sleeping on the lumpy couch, but the last thing he’d been ready to do the night before was lay down on the filthy sheets in his father’s bedroom, especially if he had to pass that spot on the stairs to get there. He sat up and tried to stretch a crick out of his back. If he was going to spend another night here, he’d need to tackle the upstairs.

How long was he staying anyway? His ticket home was for Wednesday but could he really get everything done by then? It had taken him hours to clean the kitchen. The rest of the house would take days. And then there were the papers to go through. Maybe he could shove those in a suitcase, more like two or three suitcases, and only that if he sorted out the magazines and junk mail to leave behind. But the thought of sitting on the floor of his sterile New York apartment wading through the evidence of his father’s illness made him nauseated. Better that what happened in Lacland stayed in Lacland.

Osborne had assumed there wasn’t a will, but for all anyone knew, Buddy had left everything to the John Birch Society and the documentation was at the bottom of one of those piles of papers, or stuffed in the china cabinet or buried in the backyard. And they’d be welcome to it. Nick had a fleeting fantasy of handing over all the chaos and garbage to some rabid group of insane old white guys. He could picture them going through everything with a feverish intensity, looking for treasures and threats. Back in the real world, Nick would need to sift through the stacks of paper for evidence of a bank account. And bills. It was too cold outside to neglect the gas and electric bills. And maybe somewhere in this forest of dead trees there’d be an explanation of why, or at least why now.

It wasn’t just the paperwork or the house, there was his father’s body to deal with. Nick shuddered at the image of his dad lying on some refrigerated storage shelf with a note on his toe. That probably only happened on TV. Nick tried to remember going to a funeral as a kid but he couldn’t come up with anything. Given the weather, maybe they’d stuck his dad in an unheated shed where the mice could gnaw on him. Shit. This wasn’t helping.

There wasn’t anything he could do about it over the weekend. Osborne had said he’d need to wait until Monday to call the funeral home. And arrange what—a funeral? Would anyone come? What did you do to memorialize a sick and lonely old man? Before his mother’s funeral, his grandmother had spent hours contacting friends and family. Should Nick be calling people now, and if so, who?

EXCERPT

Matthias indulges in a little flashback about his one and only physical encounter with Dylan, back in college:

Matthias leaned back and allowed long-repressed pleasure to spread through his body as he thought about putting the Dylan demon to bed at last.

Nineteen-year-old Dylan had been putty in Matthias’s hands. So willing and yet different from Matthias’s other conquests. Matthias remembered bright green eyes that met his gaze, that seemed to see right into Matthias, past the multiple layers of masks he wore for the world. That in itself was disturbing but intriguing. Dylan had been the odd combination of a submissive body and fiery, probing mind. Matthias had thought deflecting Dylan’s reporter’s instincts would be simple.

Perhaps he could blame his panic back then on being twenty-two and not fully in control of his emotions. He’d failed with Dylan, but that knowledge didn’t stop a small smile from creeping onto his lips at the memory of the hesitant phone call.

Dylan had finally called Matthias and asked him out for coffee, stumbling over the words in a charming manner. Matthias had cut through the bullshit and invited Dylan to the plush men’s club he sometimes prowled when feeling restless. He’d been wanting a break from all the schmoozing he did daily with the rich kids, sons and daughters of well-placed parents who’d someday have the kind of influence Matthias didn’t have, being born dirt-poor and disreputable. Dylan presented the perfect distraction.

Dylan had nothing to offer other than his body, so Matthias could relax and let his guard down a little. Or so he’d thought.

Things had started off well. Matthias picked Dylan up in Archie’s Porsche, and Dylan had been suitably sparkly-eyed and breathless.

“Damn, you’re cute,” Matthias said after Dylan had slid into the low seat and buckled himself in.

“Thanks,” Dylan said, cheeks heating in that adorable way. Matthias wondered if they might skip the club and go right to his apartment, but he reminded himself he wanted to savor the anticipation. Dylan’s nervous excitement was an aphrodisiac to Matthias, not that he needed it.

“Nice car,” Dylan commented, his blush deepening. Of course it was a nice car. A rich LSU alum had “loaned” it to Arch back when Arch was still a hot property with prospects.

Dylan ran his fingers across the expensive leather, and Matthias couldn’t help but imagine those fingers stroking the sensitive skin of his cock. He almost sideswiped a city bus. Dylan clutched the edge of his seat, and Matthias laughed. It felt good to think of nothing other than sex.

“Eyes on the road, Krall,” Dylan said.

“Then stop doing that thing with your fingers.” Matthias grinned while dodging the steady stream of traffic on Lakeview. Taillights streamed around them, and he let himself enjoy maneuvering the sleek machine.

Dylan laced his hands demurely in his lap, which didn’t help Matthias’s concentration. His gaze was drawn over and over again to his passenger. Dylan wore snug-fitting jeans, a green dress shirt that matched his eyes, and a scuffed brown leather jacket, bomber style. There was nothing about him that would normally set Matthias’s radar to pinging. Yes, he was hot, but Matthias had no shortage of sexy young men to choose from. And yet the minute Matthias had walked into that packed auditorium, he’d zeroed in on the shy blond like he was the only man in the room.

Matthias looked forward to delving into Dylan and finding out just how suggestible he was to the new hypnotic techniques Matthias was studying.

BLURB: Chad has pined for Raudel since high school, but he’s been avoiding him ever since Raudel caught him in an excruciatingly embarrassing moment. So when Chad’s sister invites Raudel to join them for her weeklong prewedding celebration at Lake Tahoe, Chad is horrified. He brainstorms his escape, until reality crashes down and he discovers he’s bunking with Raudel in the last available bedroom at the lakeside retreat.

Thrown together by the bridal party from hell, Chad and Raudel unite and attempt to survive Chad’s bridezilla sister, a crazy grandmother, an overbearing mother, and the search for the perfect chocolate fountain. Despite the little time they have together, they reconnect when unexpected discoveries come to light. Love may find a way amid the nuptial chaos, but it’s unlikely to be exactly the way they expect.
Excerpt

The door was still open due to the parade of stuff being brought into the rental, so Chad strolled out into the early April sunshine. The sun hadn’t warmed up the trees enough, so all he inhaled was the faintest aroma of pine. It would eventually become the prevailing scent as the summer heat took over. Tahoe had always been one of his favorite places to vacation when he was a kid.

Not so much right now.

But there was the hint of a chill in the air, and Chad prayed to the weather gods that rain, sleet, or snow wouldn’t disrupt Lindsey’s fantasy dream week. They’d probably have to rent a straitjacket for her otherwise. He idly wondered if those were available at wedding-party stores.

Both his mom and Daniel’s mom had encouraged Lindsey to have the ceremony in the summer, but she’d dug in her heels. According to her, the heat and bugs would be awful, and in addition everyone in the continental United States would be getting married then as well, so it would be too crowded when they went into town. It was about the only thing regarding her wedding that Chad had agreed with her on so far.

Chad tripped over his own feet and had to grab the side-view mirror of the Suburban to keep from face-planting on the cement driveway.

Raudel. Fuck!

Lindsey had sworn he wouldn’t be showing up until later that evening, well after the rest of them had arrived. Chad didn’t have his game face on yet, hadn’t practiced in the mirror or rearranged the furniture.

Shit. Damn.

Internally swearing wasn’t actually helping, so he refocused on what his opening line to the ex-crush of his life should be.

Raudel had parked on the carefully maintained dirt near the end of the driveway, over by one of the enormous evergreens surrounding the property. Either the management company or the owners of the lake house appeared to have verified that not one pine needle disgraced the cleared forest area that extended from the end of the driveway.

He seemed busy enough gathering items together from within his vehicle, so Chad thought he might not have even noticed him yet. Chad aborted all plans and raced back into the house, almost mowing his mother over in the process as he slammed into her. He grabbed her upper arms to keep her from crashing to the floor.

“Chad! Watch what you’re doing!”

“Sorry!”

She looked him up and down as if he was hiding something. “Where’s the fountain? You know I can’t carry anything too heavy. My back is still recovering from falling off Sassy.”

His mom had been cranky ever since she’d toppled off her prized mare—really more of a spoiled pet that she fawned over in their enormous backyard. The doctor wouldn’t let her ride for at least another month, and it was her favorite thing to do. She’d since turned her attention to other pursuits, most of which involved holding her daughter’s hand as Lindsey navigated through the previously unknown, treacherous waters of impending marriage. The rest of her focus was saved for sniping at him and his dad.

“I—” Think idiot, think. “—thought I’d search for a hand truck. I saw a shed in the backyard, so I’ll just go check real quick.”

He’d only made it one step forward before his mom stood defiantly in front of him, hands on her hips, effectively blocking his escape.

“Chadwick Barton. I don’t know why you’ve been acting so strange all day, but I’ve had it up to here!” He waited for her to indicate how far she’d had it up to, but she carried on with her rant instead. “You can really help out by simply doing what I say right now. We don’t have time for thinking. Stay on task.”

EXCERPT

The elderly man shifted in the wheelchair, and Nash Marino tucked in the loose blanket around his patient.

“There, that’s better,” Nash said. “I don’t want you to get chilled.”

Nash glanced up as the elevator stopped, then blinked and stiffened when a familiar figure from his recent past stepped in. Not that he had anything against Truman Greene— he’d always enjoyed the company of this man and his entire family. In fact, he missed them. A lot.

It wasn’t Truman’s fault things had gone so wrong between his son and Nash. It wasn’t anybody’s fault. That was one of the things that pissed off Nash the most about the whole situation. He couldn’t reasonably be angry at anyone involved, not without looking like a jackass. He was definitely more than a little peeved at fate, however.

Nash cleared his throat. “Hello, Mr. Greene. I hope your family’s well.”

Truman’s head jerked up as his attention was drawn from the phone he’d been studying. “Nash! How are you, son? Yes, yes, I’m here visiting a friend. The family’s all healthy. And for Pete’s sake, I’m still Truman to you. None of this Mr. Greene nonsense!”

Nash couldn’t help but return Truman’s welcoming smile. The genuine warmth in the man’s voice cheered him. “I’m doing okay.” It wasn’t entirely a lie. He’d certainly been a mess four months ago when it had all gone down. The pain of his broken engagement still hurt when he was feeling lonely, but it wasn’t crippling him emotionally anymore.

“Sam’s stayed in touch, hasn’t he?”

“Yeah, he did.”

Nash stopped himself from elaborating. It was a painful subject that he didn’t want to rehash with his ex-fiancé’s father. Nash had realized he was never going to be able to move on with Sam contacting him every other day to check up on him. He’d let it go on as long as it had only because Sam had seemed to need the reassurance, and he loved and cared about Sam, regardless of the way things had ended. Nash could honestly say that he wished his former fiancé happiness.

“The breakup was hard on Sam, too, you know.”

Nash clenched his jaw and took a deep breath. Sure, but there wasn’t really any comparison, was there? Of course it had been hard on Sam, he didn’t deny that, but he somehow doubted Sam had spent weeks crying into his pillow. And Nash’s former fiancé sure as hell hadn’t spent his nights alone on a friend’s hard, lumpy couch. No, Sam was sleeping on the pillow-top mattress they’d once shared, and he was lying next to his husband, Henry. But, Nash wasn’t going to unleash that rant on Sam’s father.

“I do. It wasn’t his fault. Wasn’t anybody’s fault. Didn’t make it easier, though.”

The Deep Blue Sea, #2

Excerpt

Hey everyone! My name is M.A. Church, and I’ve dropped by The Purple Rose Tea House to talk about my release, Riding the Tide. This is book two in the Deep Blue Sea series. Blair Estes, a creature of land, is perfectly happy with his nomadic lifestyle. No strings keep him tied to any one place long. Adventure is his lover and adrenaline his master. He loves to travel, and the things he’s seen—things that defy description. Now his wandering brings him to the Seychelle islands and a mysterious merman who intrigues him.

Fascinated and attractive, Blair accepts a date with Marcus, only to panic later and question the circumstances of how they met. Blair, a millionaire, wonders if the whole thing isn’t a set up. Is he being targeted for his money? As panic grows and doubts swirl, Blair runs all the way back to the States.

Only then does he examine his actions and sees what a mistake he’s made. Can he make it right? And more importantly, where has Marcus disappeared to?

***

The dolphins showed off for the humans who leaned over the railings, pointing and laughing. Marcus chuckled as he listened to the dolphins. The little imps were hoping the humans would throw food to them. Even over the noise of the ship’s motor and the excited clicks of the dolphins, he could hear the human voices, but he couldn’t distinguish their words.

Losing interest, he swam from the ship. Once he was far enough, he surfaced and flipped his long hair out of the way. A warm tropical breeze swirled around him then moved on. There was nothing he enjoyed more than the moonlight on the water. It was a beautiful sight, and one he treasured.

Then the wind shifted, and a scent—the most tantalizing fragrance he’d ever smelled—slammed into him. Heady and tropical, the smell reminded him of Wright’s Gardenia, one of the Seychelles’s loveliest trees. Its white flowers were speckled with deep red splotches and its scent was strong… something he shouldn’t smell this far out in the ocean.

Shit.

EXCERPT

“Nicholas Alsteen?” A man. He couldn’t place the voice. A buyer? Nick hoped so. Selling one of his few remaining finished pieces might take the edge off that damned financial drip.

“Yes.” The familiar stairwell mix of mold and stale cooking enveloped Nick as he waited for the man to go on.

There was a pause and then, “I’m calling about your father.”

“My father?” Nick stopped, one foot halfway to the next step. “There must be some mistake.”

“You’re Nicholas Alsteen, the artist, correct? Your father was Robert Alsteen, he went by—”

“Buddy.” Nick finished. “But whatever you want, I can’t help you. I haven’t seen him in years.”

“He’s dead, son.” Despite the harshness of the words, the voice sounded kind.

Nick sank onto the step.

“My name’s Dan Osborne of the Lacland Sheriff’s Department,” the voice continued. “I’m sorry to spring it on you like this but I’m afraid you’re going to have to come out here. You’re his closest relative. He didn’t leave a will so you’ll need to figure out what to do with his stuff. It isn’t much, the house, a truck. And there’s the…you’ll need to make arrangements for his remains.”

“I think there’s more family somewhere, but he cut himself off.” Nick stared at the dirty stairwell wall, picturing his father’s angry face.

“Doesn’t matter. You’re his legal next of kin.” When Nick didn’t say anything, the sheriff continued, “If you want I can put you in touch with folks who could do it all for you but given everything, it would probably cost more than the estate is worth. And besides, it’s the right thing to do, son. I know Buddy wasn’t easy, but he was your father.”

Some father. But Nick wasn’t exactly in a position to hire out his dirty work. “Okay.”

“When can you come?” Osborne sounded relieved.

Nick looked at his watch, as if that would tell him anything. His calendar was as simple as it could be—big scary opening in nine months, nothing until then. He mumbled something about soon and hung up. A woman was yelling a few floors down. Horns honked outside. A cold blast of air filled the stairwell as the front door opened. Nick stood and climbed back up the stairs, feeling a hundred years older than when he’d started down.

Life stops for death. Nick booked an expensive flight—whatever happened to bereavement rates? He texted Connie at the gallery so she’d know he hadn’t bolted town. He glanced through his phone contact list and decided there wasn’t anyone else who’d really care. He’d always told himself he had to stay detached to have time for his art. But maybe he was more like his father than he wanted to admit. Nick tried to wrap his brain around the thought that the old man was dead. Violent? Yes. Unpredictable? Yes. Crazy? Absolutely. Dead? That was hard to imagine.

Synopsis

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire… Whenever Jones touches him, flames flicker in Truitt Larkin’s smoky-gray eyes.

Growing up in Ember Peak, Colorado, Jones nurtured dreams as big as the Rockies. Why else would a flat-broke college student believe he has a shot with Truitt Larkin, the billionaire CEO of Larkin Corp? And, sure, Tru might own the fab, five-thousand-acre Ember Peak Ranch, where Jones is just the son of a ranch employee, but that doesn’t mean a future with Tru is doomed, does it? When he finally, finally convinces Tru to break his chiseled-in-rock no-sex-ever policy, Jones is sure smoke will never shroud Tru’s silver-flame eyes again.

But fire burns and dreams crash. And when Tru shuts down Jones’s hopes, Jones leaves Ember Peak—and a big chunk of his heart—for good.

Tru knows he’s responsible for fracturing his valued friendship with Jones. Indulging his attraction to the younger man was selfish and destructive—something he’ll always regret. When Jones returns to Ember Peak for a family wedding, Tru wants a chance to heal their friendship and give back to Jones the comfort of coming home. But sparks fly the moment they reunite, and they scramble to douse the passion that’s burned them both before. Yet a flicker of hope glows brightly, and soon they need all their courage to see their way to a future together.

Excerpt

I took a cookie from the tin and bit into it, sighing as the butterscotch chips melted on my tongue. I shot a glance at Tru as I chewed. Why was he being so quiet? He was still staring. At me. Well, at my chest, I guess.

I looked down. Oh yeah.

I’d had some ink done since the last time he’d gotten a gander at my bare chest. I kept my fingers firmly wrapped around the cookie tin, ignoring my instinct to cover what he was looking at.

“Nice, huh, Tru?” Sandra asked from beside me, her voice teasing as she watched her brother check me out.

He pulled his gaze from my chest and glanced at Sandra. Then he looked back at me. “What the hell is it?”

I laughed. Couldn’t help it. He just seemed so…shocked.

I licked cookie crumbs from my lips and said, “It’s a thing a lot of people do these days, Truitt. It’s a drawing that was drilled into the dermal layer of my flesh with pulsing needles. Commonly known as a tattoo.”

Silver eyes sliced into me. “I get that, smart ass.” He did the Eastwood rasp so much better than me. “What is it, though?” he persisted. “Something from your travels?”

“Why don’t you go closer and see?” Sandra asked, laughter threatening to spill again.

I sent her a scowl—the little instigator.

I didn’t like Tru’s tone. Or his expression. The idea that he was bugging out about me getting a tattoo didn’t sit well with me. At all. In fact, it made my skin prickle and heat rush to my face.

“What the hell is wrong with getting a tattoo?” I asked him.

At the same moment I was asking this rude question, Sandra was explaining, “It’s a landscape from the ranch—the northwest peak above Shadow Creek to be exact.”

There was a weird moment of silence.

“It’s the what, now?” Tru asked, eyebrows scrunched.

“You heard me.” Sandra kicked his jean-clad leg. “His favorite spot on the ranch. You should recognize it. It’s one of your faves, too.”

I swallowed hard as I watched a bunch of expressions cross Tru’s face—like clouds gaining speed and mass as they prepared to let loose over the mountains.

I knew exactly what he wanted to ask. Why? Why the hell did you permanently put an image of one of Ember Peak’s most famous landmarks over your heart?

I answered him even though I knew he’d never voice the question and likely would never admit to even wondering about it. “I grew up here,” I reminded him. “Even though I’ll never live here again, this land fed my roots, helped me grow. I won’t forget that. So…it seemed like a good choice.” I was happy my voice came out sounding relatively normal. Not defensive. Or angry. Like I felt.

2016Synopsis

Sparks ignite and tempers flare when a sexy, optimistic wedding planner moves his business in across the hall from a jilted, divorce lawyer’s practice.

“Look smart ass. This is the last time I’m going to remind you about breaking sections of the lease. If there’s a next time, I won’t stop until you and your frilly, white wedding shit is thrown out of here. Do you got it?!”
Wylde looked in Jacob’s pained eyes and answered in his deep voice. “Yeah, counselor. I got it.”

From high school, up until he became a successful attorney Jacob Snowden was convinced that love had it out for him. “Everyone left,” were the words he lived by. His mother, his high school sweetheart, his father, and his fiancé, all left Jacob just when he felt it was safe to let down his guard. Not any longer. Jacob was a determined man, set at keeping people at a distance. If his six foot one, military-made body didn’t scare people off, his permanent scowl surely did. At almost forty, Jacob’s social life was non-existent, but he told himself his work fulfilled him. He helped people get out of their loveless marriages. Jacob Snowden was one of the best divorce lawyers on the east coast and was damn proud of it. So, imagine his disdain when a wedding planner moves into the suite directly adjacent to his… an insanely masculine, male wedding planner.

Wylde Sterling had made quite a name for himself in his hometown of Roanoke, Virginia, working for a wedding planner that catered to the elite. He was known for his charm and impeccable taste. Yep, he was incredible at giving couples the wedding of their dreams. But he wanted nothing more than to plan his own. After striking out in love more times than he cared to admit, Wylde decided to start his own business in a new city, hoping Richmond would give him a fresh start. Things started out wonderfully – until he started to piss off the angry divorce attorney next door.

Wylde could see past Jacob’s mean scowl, knowing there was a reason for it. It was the man’s defense mechanism, his means of keeping people away. Everything in Wylde told him to stay away, but he believed Jacob just needed to meet a man who had been hurt as badly as he had.

This story ends in an HEA and does not end on a cliffhanger.

2016Excerpt

Jacob loosened his light brown tie again while he sat in the parking lot, doubting himself for the millionth time. This was so unlike him. When there was something that needed to be done, he did it. Simple. But this was far outside of his comfort zone. He didn’t do friendly things, he avoided friendly.

You’re being a pussy. Jacob growled and got out of his car, slamming the door a little harder than intended. He needed to walk into Wylde’s office with confidence, not a scowl. He retrieved his gift and tightly held his briefcase in the other hand. Jacob walked quickly down the sidewalk, trying not to lose his nerve in the short distance. He dipped into his own office and set his briefcase down by the door. His employees looked quizzically at him, but he ignored them – no time to explain – and hurried across the hall.

He peeked inside and saw Wylde leaning against the woman’s desk that Jacob had fussed at before. He looked so carefree and playful as he laughed with his staff. He had on a plain white dress shirt and light blue jeans. The black studded belt and leather boots did nice things to his balls. For shit’s sake, he was dressed like one of the Outsiders. Jacob didn’t even know he was into that look. Fuck. The curly haired guard dog was standing there drinking a cup of coffee too, all of them looking like close friends.

It was now or never. Jacob tightened his jaw and opened the door. All heads turned his way and three mouths dropped open in shock. He guessed they recognized the tall, royal blue stock flower in his hand as he moved forward, his eyes glued on Wylde’s surprised smile. Jacob stood there; uncomfortably warm in his long black coat while he waited for some type of signal. Wylde gave him a slight tilt of his head, directing Jacob towards his office.

Thank god. He didn’t want to do or say anything out there in front of them. He knew they thought of him as the devil incarnate, but he wasn’t worried about what they thought… yet. He had to get Wylde on his side first. He followed Wylde into his office and as soon as the door closed, Wylde moved in close to him. That deep voice that he’d been yearning to hear all week was worth all the worry he’d endured.

“Where’d you get that?” Wylde said in amazement. “I can’t believe you remembered what I was talking about.”

Jacob handed Wylde the long, fragrant flower, their fingers brushed against each other and Jacob didn’t want to let go and lose the contact.

He cleared his throat, looking into Wylde’s light brown eyes, or were they hazel? His goatee was trimmed neatly and Jacob had a mind to rub his own stubbled cheek over it. “I have a client who owns a large property about an hour and a half from here. It’s not a business. But I told him your dilemma and he let me come out and take a look. He has greenhouses full of rare flowers. It’s non-profit, so he gives them away.”

“You did this for me?” Wylde whispered, moving impossibly closer.

Jacob’s confidence was waning, his eyes darting all around the office, but Wylde didn’t let him off the hook. “Jacob?”

“Yeah. I wanted to say thank you, um, for everything. Possibly for not having me arrested for destruction of property.” Jacob was trying hard not to start stuttering and backtracking like a flustered boy, but Wylde’s presence was strong and of course, that wonderful, clean smell was killing him softly.

“You already said thank you, and I said you’re welcome. Nothing else was needed. Now you come a week later with a completely out of season, custom sprayed flower.” Wylde’s gaze followed Jacob’s eyes everywhere as he tried to avert them. “I’ve never had anyone pay that much attention to my words.”

Jacob stopped feeling uncomfortable when he realized that Wylde recognized the flower for what it was. Jacob watched the expressions play across that handsome face while he confessed something Wylde probably already knew. “Not too many people go out of their way to help me, so I thought I’d return the favor, is all.”

Wylde leaned forward, and Jacob held his breath. He didn’t know what was about to happen, he wasn’t even sure if he was ready for it. For so much sweetness.

“Breathe,” Wylde whispered, and Jacob’s breath rushed out on a gasp that made his face heat in embarrassment.

He chuckled lightly. “You’re killing me,” Jacob confessed.

Wylde’s cheek was right there next to his, but neither of them were doing anything about the close proximity. Jacob didn’t know what kind of seduction this was, but he liked it.

“I helped you, you’ve helped me. You’ve apologized, I’ve accepted,” Wylde said softly against Jacob’s ear. “We’re square now, okay.”

Jacob bit the bullet and turned his head just an inch so he could coax a light touch out of him. With their cheeks scraping delicately, Jacob’s brain caught up enough to say “Okay.”

“Now.” Wylde smiled. Even though they were so close, their mouths inches from each other’s, Wylde’s deep voice vibrated inside Jacob’s chest. “Have dinner with me tonight.”

It’d worked! He’d taken a huge gamble, put himself out there and it’d worked. Jacob nodded and gulped hard when Wylde’s smooth lips caressed his jaw. “Seven?”

“Mm hmm,” Jacob said, trying not to moan. He had a lot of work to do today but he’d put off anything for more of Wylde’s sexy teasing. Jacob didn’t want to move but they couldn’t stay joined the way they were for the rest of the day.

Not stepping back an inch, Jacob reached inside his coat pocket and pulled out his client’s card with the address on it. “He’s expecting your call. There’s plenty more of those long ones. I saw them myself.” Jacob felt Wylde’s nod as he slowly tucked the card in Wylde’s back pocket. Careful not to creepily linger too long. If he just relaxed and wasn’t an ass tonight, there’d be plenty of time for more touching. Jacob just prayed it was soon.
